Hot White Orange
Hot White Orange is an inhabitable warm water experience. It is a solar heated, soft amphitheater designed to accommodate 30 people. The inspiration was the succulent fruit of life -The ORANGE. 15 graduate students at the University of California at Berkeley under a studio taught by Mark Anderson designed and outsourced to local fabricators the separate components necessary for the assembly of the orange. The project has a steel frame exoskeleton, air-filled bladder internal structure, hydronic heating coils circulating hot water supplied by pump from a satellite solar heating bladder. The heating coils are wrapped around water-filled thermal ballast blankets beneath the external vinyl skin, which is lit from within. Hot White Orange was installed in Wurster Hall’s Courtyard in 2005 and served as an outdoor seminar room, a party instigator as well as a hang out place.
